History & Geography

Hague School is fortunate to be situated, easy access to the many important historical and cultural places of interest in the capital and which though our programme of visits children are taken to as part of their learning.  We aim to give pupils at Hague a sense of time and of their place in history.  We aim to use teaching methods which reinforce questioning of events and actions, prediction and deduction based on research and evaluation.

Children are introduced to places and ways of life in Bethnal Green as well as Europe and across the world.  We have a programme of visits which support geographical learning about the environment beyond the city which includes day visits to the countryside and residential visit to Suffolk for Year 6.

Religious Education

The aims of religious education are:

  • to acquire knowledge and understanding of principle religions represented in the UK: Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism and Judaism

  • to develop the ability to explore, to reflect on and to respond to human experience, drawing on the study of religion.

Through RE topics, pupils are given opportunities to reflect on the beliefs, attitudes, values, practices and behaviours of world religions.   Skills developed through the teaching of RE include developing self awareness, respect an open mind, appreciation and wonder. We encourage all children and families to learn more about how we can celebrate similarities and diffferences between us.

RE is taught in all classes following guidelines from LBTH agreed RE syllabus.

Parents have the right to withdraw their child from RE lessons and religious assemblies if they wish and should contact the Headteacher if they wish to do so. Alternative provision will be made for your child.  Religious Education brings the school community together as we encourage children to achieve a knowledge and understanding of their own religion and to respect the religion of others through knowledge and understanding.

The school has no affiliations to any specific religious order but looks to develop contact with the London Mosque, local church groups and the synagouge to support teaching and learning about the main religions at Hague.

Art & Design

The school has a full range of resources to explore different art media and technology projects.  All children engage in a process of designing, making evaluating and adjusting their creations for real practical purposes, be it for play, display, music or eating In Art children are encouraged to express themselves through a range of drawing and painting media and to learn to appreciate art in its many forms.

Music

We follow Music Express as a scheme to support pupil's skills development. Pupils learn to use their voices and instruments to be expressive and creative. We also teach them to listen with attention to a range of music from different traditions, composers and musicians.

Modern Foreign Languages

We believe that learning a foreign language prepares our pupils to participate in a rapidly changing world in which work and other activities are often carried out in languages other than English. The rise of international commerce means that pupils need to be equipped with the skills needed in the international workplace. The choice of which language to teach is secondary to the lifelong language learning skills that the pupils will be encouraged to develop. Skills that they will be able to access in the future will help them to learn new languages or to improve their competence in an existing language. Learning another language also means our pupils learn about another culture and way of life, thus promoting and developing a broader intercultural understanding and curiosity about the world. The study of a second language also supports children’s literacy and oracy in school by raising awareness of aspects of their own language(s), thereby enriching their understanding of both. Increased capability in the use of MFL promotes initiative, confidence and independent learning and encourages diversity and acceptance within society.

Spanish is taught in Years 3-6 as part of the national entitlement to the study of a second language. Years 1-6 are also presented with a ‘Spanish Word of the Week’ every Friday in assembly to promote Spanish across the school. While paused during Covid, this will restart in January 2022. Our aim is to support pupils to develop an enthusiastic and positive attitude to other languages and language learning. We hope to encourage a life-long learning of languages among our pupils in order to enhance their understanding of the world and their future economic well-being.

We follow the iLanguages scheme of work which covers National Curriculum requirements and a variety of learning styles. We also have a link with rural schools in Asturias, Spain. This is a penpal project for some Year 4-6 children. Originally set up via the e-Twinning portal, it allows our children to improve their Spanish and increase their intercultural understanding, sharing videos, letters and creative projects with their Spanish peers. Year 3 also have a topic on Spain where they learn about the geography of the country.

Hague has also successfully won an Erasmus+ mobility grant to increase teachers' subject knowledge and confidence in teaching Spanish to our students, whereby a group of teachers will be going on a language course in Malaga in 2022.
