The Intent

We believe that learning about the world and their place within it enables our children to develop into well rounded global citizens. We aim to inspire a fascination and curiosity about the diversity of the local and wider world and the people who live in it. Lessons are planned so that there is time for discussion and debate, fostering an environment of enquiry. 

At SHH we have planned our Geography curriculum so that children will: 

• Develop locational knowledge about where significant places, countries and cities are, both in Britain and the wider world. 

• Know what makes our local area special.

• Understand the physical and human features that give places their unique character and make comparisons between places. 

• Learn about key physical and human processes that shape landscapes and change places over time.

• Feel empowered to make a positive impact on their environment.

• Understand the ways in which places are connected and interdependent eg through the distribution of resources.

• Have opportunities to collect and analyse data through enquiries and fieldwork. 

• Be able to interpret sources of geographical information, including maps, globes, aerial photographs and digital mapping.

• Use geographical language to communicate their learning in a variety of ways.

 

The Implementation

Geography is taught three times a year 1-6 as a half termly topic. By ensuring high standards of teaching and learning in geography, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school, allowing children to build on previous skills and knowledge and make connections between topics. 

At SHH, we strive to enable all children to gain ‘real-life’ experiences. For example, knowing that people come from all over the world in the Foundation stage, using the local area to follow maps in Key Stage 1, to comparing the similarities and differences in environments and communities in Lower Key Stage 2, through to looking at current affairs such as natural disasters as a result of extreme weather in Upper Key Stage 2.

The Impact

We ensure that children at SHH are equipped with geographical skills and knowledge that will enable them to be ready for the curriculum at Key Stage 3 and for life as an adult in the wider world. We want them to able able to speak with confidence with relation to geographical terms, knowledge and link their learning to the real world around them.

We want all our children to be geographers.

We want the children to have thoroughly enjoyed learning about geography, therefore encouraging them to undertake new life experiences now and in the future.
